Thoughts on Rey Standalone film?
OK I’m trying to be more open minded than I previously was. Do I think it’s going to be a good movie? No. Am I mad they’re making the movie? Kind of. Is that just for petty reasons? Mostly. I’m not going to sugarcoat it.
I dislike Rey. I have explained before why that is and I’m trying to be a bit more civil about it especially now that I have friends that are Rey fans. I personally think if they are making a standalone movie, they should explore the characters that have more potential for growth. Of course they could introduce a character flaw in this movie but I feel it’s a bit late and I don’t really see A very compelling story from Rey considering the canon that we have. Because you know, Palpatines granddaughter to me is not really something I want them to explore more, and we’ve already seen Jedi’s struggling to teach their powers to someone else before, so that isn’t really unique to me. That is all I can really think that they could do with her character. Aside from like romance and I am not a FinnRey shipper, even though I know that is a very popular ship. I’d probably only be interested in the relationship mildly if it was a lesbian one, and God knows Disney is not gonna do that. (they should confirm it and rebuild the galaxy though evil Rose x Darth Rey is cool.) and even then I would only be interested in it because I appreciate lesbian representation that doesn’t necessarily mean that I would be invested in the ship because I simply just do not care about Rey’s relationships and honestly, it would be equally cool if they revealed her as being Ace Aro which they also won’t do (she does give Ace vibes though). Anyway, I went on a tangent.
Now a stand alone movie about Finn I would understand, Poe even though I feel like Finn would make more sense. In fact, I think a flashback movie dedicated to Kylo Ren, and how he fell to the Darkside and his first days in the order would be great. Arguably the most interesting option. And I’m not just saying that because I like Kylo a lot. (I know logistically getting Adam driver to reprise The role is probably a lot harder than getting Daisy Ridley to. I’m just saying it would be cool.)
now that brings me to the petty reason, you know aside for me just not liking her character. It’s just gonna remind me that Kylo is dead. And I don’t think he should be dead, and that angers me. And then it’s just a pipeline because if I start thinking about Kylo, then I start thinking about Hux and how I’m angered about what happened to him. Which will also intern, make me feel angered about how they treated the entire first order in general, when in my opinion, they were far more interesting than the republic and resistance. So I’m just going to spiral for a bit. And I’m also going to be thinking about how the movie would be different if those people were alive and how I would probably like it better. And also how I’m just mad at Disney, and Disney, Star Wars in general, which will lead me down a rabbit hole of being depressed about acolyte cancellation again.
anyway all of this to stay if you are excited for the movie and you want to watch the movie then good for you. I’m glad you can be excited about something Star Wars even if I don’t share the same sentiment. And if they make the movie and I hate it, I’m not going to come attack you I’m not going to harass, you with hate comments and constantly talk directly to you about how I feel it’s bad just because I know you like it, and I’m not going to say how I think it should be removed from Disney. Because just because I don’t like some thing does not give me the right to ruin it for the fans. If it’s not for me, I just will not watch it Again. And I will share my criticism in constructive ways towards people that want to hear it and asked for it. (yes, this is me being passive aggressive to acolyte haters) And I will, by no means come for the Actors. Poor Daisy, Ridley has to deal with enough from all of the male fans getting pissed that she said she couldn’t change the way how SOME men saw a women. Like come on people we are adults.

Edit: Stop telling people what they should or should not like! (I'm looking at you FinnRey AND Reylo shippers!)
I wanted to come here to address something that really boils my anger and has been pissing me off for a few days. Over the last couple of days I have seen an increase in negative comments towards Reylo and people who ship Reylo. The hashtag Kylo is currently trending on Twitter and there are a lot of people actively making nasty tweets about Reylo in general and especially towards people who create art about it or who ship it. I have had 2 people this last week comment on my Reylo art post about how toxic the ship is (which is a narrative a lot of FinnRey shippers cling to when trying to justify why we shouldn't ship them). Edit: the person below is not a FinnRey shipper, it's just what they commented on my art.
I am not here to argue why me and other people ship Reylo, because I have a feeling FinnRey shippers will roll their eyes and not listen anyway. Edit: But I am here to showcase how their behaviour can be shitty when actively sending hate towards Reylo shippers. (Sending hate towards anyone is shitty in every situation and Reylos sending hate towards POC is extremely disgusting)
First of all I want to say that I am a new Star Wars fan. I have been a Star Wars denier my entire life simply because I was traumatized by Anakin burning in lava after which is reached a point where i thought I was cooler for having never watched these movies. The only reason I decided to give Star Wars a try in the first place is because I kept seeing Reylo posts on my Tumblr feed. I became really invested in their story even without ever knowing it. Which is why the first Star Wars movies I ever watched fully were the Disney sequels.
Second I want to say that telling people what they shouldn't like is a really shitty thing to do. Life is fucking miserable. It sucks ass. Especially now during a pandemic where people are even more depressed. And guess what, people like to use different media to escape this shitty reality. This is especially true for people who turn to: writing fanfiction, reading fanfiction, making fan art, fan edits (photos or videos), you name it. These are small things that brings joy to people. They don't do it for money. They'll probably get a few likes and a few comments. They spend hours creating that art for such a little price, just because it brings them joy. And what do you do? You go to these posts and tell them "you can't like this, your ship sucks, mine is better". How dare you? Do you hear yourself?
You have become the very thing you swore to destroy!
Edit: You're toxic when you shit on people and the things they enjoy. You're not God, you don't hold the absolute truth. You're not Palpatine, you're not here trying to convert people to your side. Stop trying to tell people what they should or shouldn't like. It's shitty behavior!
Third, I want to remind people that Star Wars is a work of fiction. Guess what, in fiction you're allowed to sympathize with the villain. Motivation is the very thing that drives villains. They are fascinating and complex characters. They all have a story about why they turned to the dark side. Even with all the shit they did, we still love them as characters. We still pity them, feel sorry for them. When Vader died I felt bad for him. I didn't want him to die. I wanted him to live out his days with his children. Ben/Kylo is the spitting image of Darth Vader. In fact, most people complain about the lack of creativity, and how it's a recycled idea. So what is the difference? Why do people accept Darth Vader and not Kylo Ren?
Edit: In the end, people need to stop shitting on people's parades because they have different views that doesn't align with their own. We're allowed to ship who we want. We're allowed to have different interpretations of a work of fiction. It's such a benign/harmless thing to be pissed about. A fucking fictional story that brings people joy in different ways. You don't have to like it. Focus on your own ship, one that brings you joy. Make your own fan art and edits. Stop making people feel bad about what they like. These movies are already hated enough, and there's only a handful of people who love them and it makes them happy. Why do we have to ruin that over a ship war? Enjoy what you enjoy. Have respectful debates and communicate. Please listen to each other! Understand each other's biases and why we think the way we think.
Per the request of some people, I erased the FinnRey tag.

what bothers me the most about tros and what i’m most unable to accept is how jj managed to destroy and disrespect EVERY single character. even the ones who technically had “happy endings”🤡
ben - i feel like this one doesn’t even need to be said, but i’ll say it anyways. after years of emotional abuse from palpatine, it’s disheartening to see that jj gave no explanation as to why palpatine wanted ben (personal vendetta against the skywalkers i guess??) when it semed like he only needed rey AND that ben never really triumphed over palpatine in any way. it hurts to know that leia straight up had a vision about her son’s death but that she still seemingly gave up on him despite knowing that he was struggling and that she sent him off to train to be jedi with a luke, when apparently she could’ve done that herself. it’s disheartening that luke who believed even vader could be turned back to the light also gave up on his nephew, when he was just a boy no less. it’s disheartening that although he was the last skywalker (a fact only palpatine acknowledged!), none of his family nor his namesake reached out to help him. instead of telling the last skywalker to rise, they ignored him (as they had apparently done his whole life) in favor of a palpatine. ok. even though as the last skywalker, he really should’ve been the one to have the final kill against palpatine since it was HIS family that palpatine destroyed, he doesn’t. he’s motionless in a pit for the whole final battle. ok. that will never not leave a bad taste in my mouth. his whole family (except for han apparently i love him) gave up on him and clearly so did the writers. as a fan of the skywalkers and their story, this isn’t the ending i wanted for them. especially when luke and leia and han had given their lives to see him turn to the light. and for what? so he could be used as a plot device to conveniently bring rey back to life and then promptly die (even though they’re a force dryad and, according to jj’s own fucking canon, supposedly one) without any fanfare, emotional reaction whatsoever, or later mention? wtf? it’s disrespectful not only to ben solo, who is easily the best character in the sequel trilogy and one of the best characters in ALL of star wars, but it’s disrespectful to the entire skywalker line!! (and to adam driver, who deserved so much better than this shit. go get that oscar)
rey - by making her a palpatine, jj completely disregarded her arc. whatever your opinions about rey nobody, once they went with it, they never should’ve retconned it and turned her into a legacy character in the final film. it felt cheap. in my theater, there was no cheering about this reveal. because jj had never properly set it up and he didn’t even bother to reveal it an impactful way. but what’s most annoying about rey suddenly being a legacy character is that it completely disregards the fact that she was powerful on her OWN, without any famous blood making her that way. furthermore, by turning her into the chosen one and giving her the entire skywalker legacy (which felt like a slap in the face to the skywalkers imo), she did turn into a mary sue, one of the biggest complaints about her since day 1. she was overpowered, morally perfect, and never faced any failure. i struggled to root for her as the “hero” because i felt everything was handed to her on a silver platter. so not only did jj turn her into a mary sue and take her power away from her by turning her into a legacy, but he also destroyed the fact that her whole arc had been “seeking belonging” and a family. rather than having her final scenes be with her new found family, she ends the movie with her canon soulmate dead and no one but a droid by her side on a desert planet of all places. to add further insult to injury, she also disregards her family name even though they supposedly loved her and sacrificed themselves for her (despite the fact that they sold her but whatever) in favor of a last name of a guy she had barely known. she had more emotional connection to han or leia, but she didn’t take their last name. she took luke’s, the guy who had refused to teach her and who she had come to view in a more negative light towards the end of tlj. in this house i will not EVER be calling her rey sky- i can’t even say it🤢
finn - in all honestly, they screwed finn’s character arc in episode 1 when jj turned him into a lovesick sidekick who served as comedic relief. as a deserted stormtrooper, he could’ve had the most interesting storylines. and he should have. but apparently the writers forgot about him. although they mention his past BRIEFLY, it’s paid no real weight or attention. instead, he spends the whole movie once again trying to (possibly) confess his feeling for rey. and for what? probably just to bait finnrey fans and prove the character’s heterosexuality bc it goes absolutely nowhere. although we find out he’s force sensitive, that too is glossed over and has no lasting effect. he’s also made co general, which okay cool, but then he does nothing?? so while finn could have and should have been a main character with an interesting storyline, they turn him into your average run of the mill action hero with an occasional quip. john boyega, sweetie, i’m so sorry (but i guess that’s kind of what he wanted since he hated tlj, the only movie where he actually had a main role with any character growth?? idk)
poe - it’s once again evident that they originally intended to kill off poe bc he has no arc whatsoever. he gets a little backstory as a drug smuggler now ig, which really came out of left field considering the already established canon with his past as a pilot. he’s more of the same in this movie, except more unlikable than usual (imo). he’s still stubborn, occasionally funny, but mostly he just bickers with rey, which isn’t funny, at all necessary, and doesn’t add anything to the “trio’s” dynamic. he’s at his best when he’s with finn but then, of course, jj has to remind us of how straight he is every single scene so. another character like finn who could have been great, but with the lazy writing, he has no arc, no backstory, no character growth, so he’s just mediocrity personified and just kind of there.
zorii & jannah - both could’ve been awesome. both are just there for a brief introduction and to help the heroes with maybe one thing and that’s it. both deserved better.
the skywalkers - yeah jj really said a big fuck you to luke, leia, and anakin most of all. the WORST part of tros is the fact that it basically makes the previous six episodes useless. anakin’s redemption arc? what does it matter now? he didn’t successfully bring balance to the force. he didn’t successfully kill palpatine. and now his entire bloodline is dead. ok cool😎 thank you jj!!!! what a hopeful end to the skywalker saga!!!! i love seeing that anakin failed and wasn’t REALLY the chosen one. i love that luke and leia gave their legacy to a descendant of the guy who tried to tear apart and terrorized their family. that’s really nice. i love that anakin NEVER reached out to help his grandson who struggled with the dark just like he did. but that he came in just in time to tell palp’s granddaughter to rise😍 really hopeful, lovely ending. thanks again jj! thanks for making leia seem like a bad mother who sees visions about her son but just throws in the towel and doesn’t really try to help him?? wtf??? not my princess leia. also tros luke? truly the worst luke. i really have no other words, i’m just disappointed. jj let me down in every single way possible and ones i didn’t even realize he could.
palpatine - jj also managed to ruin the best star wars villain, a feat i didn’t even think possible. palpatine had always seemed scary to me because of his inhuman qualities. but in this one, he’s back with no explanation whatsoever. he just is. he somehow managed to survive (ok🙄) and furthermore he had a kid. what in the fuck? jj clearly read harry potter and the cursed child, but he clearly also forgot to read the reviews. NOBODY LIKES IT WHEN THE PREVIOUSLY UNTOUCHABLE/SCARY VILLAIN HAS A KID OUT OF NOWHERE. NOBODY. i seriously spent the entire movie wondering who the heck would sleep with him? that’s it. he didn’t seem menacing or at all like a threat. this movie genuinely had no stakes whatsoever (that’s why ben’s death feels so out of left field bc literally for what?! but i digress) also the final “fight” where rey kills him??? very lame. he supposedly survived all those years to be taken out like that?? no thank you, i’d like a refund.
in conclusion, thank you to jj for ruining my favorite franchise by killing off every last one of my favorite characters, destroying the skywalker legacy (& killing them off), ruining seriously every character, and leaving me with despair!!! while i’ll continue to watch star wars without including episode 9, it sucks that some of my joy is zapped from my favorite series. because this is how future generations will know star wars. with this shitty ending. and any future movies will have this canon. and that really fricking sucks. thanks, i hate it.
anyways feel free to message if you’re also in the depths of despair about how this all ended!! bc the more i think about it, the sadder/angrier i get.

Since TROS came out, I’ve been dragged back into the Star Wars fandom (still on GOT though...) Surprisingly, I used to be a R*ylo shipper, but only cause everyone else was one. Now, Finnrey is my new OTP (alongside Skysolo). I guess I’m a traitor to my sisters for abandoning R*ylo for a much better ship, huh?🤣
All this talk of the new movie makes me not wanna watch it cause I know they ruined a bunch of characters at the expense of “Bendemption” (which I don’t even believe he deserved a redemption but whatever). Finn is force sensitive, but he got no lightsaber or training😒 So, I gave my boy one.

Other favorite ships abd fandoms besides titanic, avatar, and zutara?
Oh yes, definitely! Quite a few, even!
I’m a huge The Greatest Showman fan! What really sold me on it was the trailer 6 months before release. I couldn’t wait until Christmas 2017, bought the album as soon as it was released, listened to every song multiple times to know them by heart when I was to see the movie, and I still adore it! My favourite ship from that movie Carlwheeler (or Anne and Phillip). They’re adorable, and I should definitely work on my Haunted Mansion AU again.
I’ve been in the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom for a while, though not as much as Endgame (I was incredibly satisfied by the ending, though I bawled like a baby for the last 30 minutes straight + the end credits, Tony Stark hit me hard!) The movie that really made me love the MCU was Captain America: The First Avenger. It’s still SO good, as I’ve realized when doing my gigantic MCU rewatch before Endgame. My favourite ship Steggy (or Steve and Peggy). It took us almost 10 years, but I ended up winning on that one!! It doesn’t happen often, let me tell you. I like the ships that get effed over. As you’ll see from now on.
I’ve loved Star Wars for years. My favourite movie is and always will be Return of the Jedi, followed closely by The Force Awakens. Luke is my all-time favourite character. I headcanon him hardcore as aromantic and asexual. It’s been... rough, to say the least. Ever since The Last Jedi was released. All my faves were done so dirty by that movie, it’s never really been the same since. Though The Mandalorian has given me faith in the franchise once again, especially this week! My favourite ship is Finnrey (or Finn and Rey)! Finn got sidelined and Rey was turned into a shell of her former self for Rey/lo. They deserved better.
Speaking of franchises that got effed over, I was in the X-Men: First Class until Apocalypse came out in 2016. That one was about as bad as The Last Jedi for me. It utterly destroyed the X-Men franchise and I couldn’t bare watching the other movies that came after. Even the fandom kind of fell out of disgrace after that movie, everybody dropped and went home. Thankfully, Marvel got the rights back for the X-Men (and Fantastic Four, though that’s irrelevant here), so we’ll see where they take these characters! My favourite ship was Cherik (or Charles and Erik). I love how they fought for each other, understood each other like no one else could, and were incredibly powerful as a team. Equals.
And again, speaking of franchises that got effed over, I was in the Harry Potter fandom for a long, long time. My favourite movie was Prisoner of Azkaban. I started losing faith about Harry Potter when the first Fantastic Beasts came out (it was a mess, I loved Newt Scamander, but the storylines did NOT mix well together, the tones clashed, I hate the Grindelwald storyline and the movie and History of Wizards in North America REEKS of racism). J.K. Rowling’s TERFery really put the nail in the coffin for me. I loved Harmione (or Harry and Hermione), always have since I was a kid. I didn’t read the books growing up, so I was really mad when they didn’t end up together. Sigh.
AND AGAIN, speaking of franchises that got effed over, I loved Once Upon a Time, too. Until the whole show became “we love Captain Hook for no reason other than Colin O’Donoughue is hot and Cap/tain Swa/n is the most popular ship” show. I used to love Rumbelle (Rumplestiltskin and Belle), but that ship was literally ruined by the show. I loved a lot of Emma ships, like Emma x Graham, Emma x August and Emma x Neil (which, in turn, all got worse and worse endings) but Emma, too, was ruined by the show in favour of Captain Hook and the toxic Cap/tain Swa/n fans that pushed everyone out of the fandom. Urgh.
ANYWAY I love the ships with awesome badass women and the men who will stand by their side and be awed 24/7 by them. Which fits Zutara pretty well. Cheriks fits with the enemies part and the powerful equals part, too!
Honourable mentions (where I dabble with the series/movies but don’t really follow the fandoms, you’ll probably see some content of these reblogged on my blog though!) go to:
-Miraculous Ladybug and the Love Square
-The Chronicles of Narnia (my childhood fandom before fandoms were a thing) and Suspian/Susan and Caspian
-The Mummy and Rick O’Connell x Evelyn Carnahan
-The old animated Barbie movies (my childhood!), I don’t have ships for those, my favourites are Princess and the Pauper, Fairytopia and Rapunzel
-Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves which doesn’t have a fandom and I don’t really have a favourite ship except Robin x Marian though my favourite character is Will Scarlet
-Frozen with AroAce Elsa and Kristanna/Kristoff and Anna.
Anyway I love supportive, loving, healthy relationships in fiction!

I'm actually very ship and let ship so long as you're doing so like, with your eyes open about what you're doing. So when TFA came out and r*ylo became a thing I thought "I personally hate this but at least we can have some good conversations about why we see a white man being violent to a woman onscreen and instinctively parse that as romantic." What a clown I was, huh? Years later all the "Ben is a cinnamon roll uwu" discourse has turned me entirely off Star Wars. Let alone the damn kiss.
Oh, you're preaching to the choir.
I've long grown accustomed to people shipping the weirdest or even outright abusive ships, but I stayed in my lane. I realized fairly early on that no matter what you say to these people, pointing out how toxic or abusive a relationship is, that they'll bury their heads in the sand and outright ignore you, oftentimes shouting about how I (and others) are "ruining their fandom experience".
That's why how I found myself in the "Anti" community (if such a thing exists). I started tagging my posts condemning these horrible ships appropriately, and they (the shippers) still came for me, often trying to use their own history of past abusive relationships as justification for supporting the ship. To which I usually responded with "to each their own" while scratching my head as to why, if they suffered that kind of abuse, would they support a ship that repeats that behavior.
I stay in my lane, but these people don't take any criticism of their ships well. It always baffles me as to why they go looking for posts that criticize something they love, but that's an overarching fandom problem that I don't have any kind of an answer to.
Circling back to R*ylo, I've said it on my blog many times before, but I originally liked Kylo. I thought he could have been one of the best villains in the Star Wars franchise. When I left the theater after The Force Awakens, I was hopeful. I left that theater knowing that Finn was the male protagonist/lead of the new trilogy and under the impression that Finnrey was going to be the big romance. But then Johnson and Kennedy did The Last Jedi and everything went downhill after that. They just reinforced the stereotype that all bad (white) guys (they're always white) actually suffered some horribly tragic backstory and therefor they're just "lashing out" and are totally justified in their irrational anger.
Someone said it better than I could, but (and I'm paraphrasing here) the reason so many of these villains or antagonists are romanticized or immediately forgiven (both by the narrative and the fandom) is that we're used to the POC being the bad guys, so when a white guy is the villain, the white guy writing him feels a kinship and says, "well they're not bad, they're just misunderstood".
For the record, I'm a diehard Finnpoe supporter. I thought John and Oscar had amazing chemistry together and within the confines of the story, it would have taken minimal effort to make that relationship happen. That being said, this is Disney, and I never actually expected that to happen. I, like many others who watched the movies, were certain they Finn and Rey would end up together, but sadly that didn't happen.
Speaking of Finn, the fandom's complete erasure of him as a character and lead is what made me be so anti R*ylo, because more often than not, when trying to woobify Ren, they systematically dismantled Finn's character and gave his backstory and redemption and nice qualities to Kylo, thereafter calling him Ben Solo. This all-encompassing notion that a black man couldn't be seen as a viable love interest for the white female lead is obnoxious and leads into a further discussion of why fandom, despite constantly calling for more Characters of Color, often overlook them, especially when they're in main and/or leading roles.
(I mean, we know that they only want the diversity if it's in a subservient role to the white people, but they don't know that we know, so we're not going to talk about it. Well feign ignorance a little longer.)
But this problem of cannibalizing a hero of color to enhance a white character isn't new. Anyone who's been to my blog in the last few weeks knows that I've been dealing with a particular Anon who absolutely loathes Scott McCall, a Mexican-American character and the titular character of the show Teen Wolf. That fandom (probably the most toxic I've ever encountered) had continuously gone out of it's way to demonize the protagonist to prop up his best friend/sidekick, often by stripping Scott of his good qualities and draping them around Stiles in an attempt to make the character more palatable.
I used to be very much a "ship and let ship" person, but I draw the line at the erasure/demonization of the characters of color in an attempt to make those crack ships happen.
(PS: sorry I took so long to get to this. Tumblr is... well, Tumblr, and I haven't been getting the notifications that I've gotten mail.)

get to know me tag game
Rules: Tag people you want to get to know better or catch up with, then answer these questions.
I was tagged by @klywrites- thank you!!
Three Ships: Hm, I don’t really have any diehard ships anymore, but some that have been a Big Deal to me in the past include finnrey from The Force Awakens (the following movies pretty much ruined my interest in the fandom though), Sirius/Remus from Harry Potter, and somewhat embarrassingly darkpilot from The Force Awakens, although for that I ended up on the “they were friends growing up and now Poe’s dealing with Ben/Kylo’s betrayal and what he’s become” angst train. Oh, bonus fourth, Sora/Kairi/Riku OT3 from Kingdom Hearts (:
Last Song: Me, Myself, and I - G-Eazy
Last Movie: Gifted (it was on the crappy cable movie channel here but it was actually pretty good)
Currently Craving: I ate the last of my hangover pizza for lunch so I’m mostly good... but I could go for a Mountain Dew |:
Currently Reading: The Fantasy Fiction Formula by Deborah Chester, but that’s less exciting than what I just read so let me squee a bit: The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin is freaking fantastic, you should definitely read it.

saddest death: 1000% qui-gon jinn to me, but also padme amidala and shmi skywalker were heavy... bhodi and chirrut and baze and cassian and jyn.... seeing han, luke and leia die also fucked w me hard ngl but i wanna rewrite the sequels anyway so i don’t take those too seriously in retrospect
favorite season movie: episode iii babey!!!!! i bawl every fucking time !!! i stan the prequels so hard and rots just is a massive fave
least favorite season movie: hmmm ep 8 or 9.... i stopped being invested sorry it was just not well done for me, too many loose ends and bad plot solutions
character that everyone else in the fandom loves, but i hate: kylo ig rip to this man but he is the snape of star wars to me...
my ‘you’re piece of trash, but you’re still a fave’ fave: anakin lmaooo, cad bane, han for sure
my ‘beautiful cinnamon roll who deserves better than this’ fave: obi-wan, FINN
my ‘this ship is wrong, nasty, and makes me want to cleanse my soul, but i still love it’ ship: uhh none op... i don’t have very many ships esp nothing nasty... maybe hardeen!obi-wan and cad bane or obi-wan and asajj ventress but i’m not too hot on it either they just have a fun dynamic... rare obikin towards tcw/rots tbh but i don’t wanna think too much abt it
my ‘they’re kind of cute, and i lowkey ship them, but i’m not too invested’ ship: obi-wan and satine bc it messes w my headcanons, finnrey
#smilesnstrings#anti reylo /#anti kylo ren /#( i am hoping so hard i don't get canceled ik the r*ylos are everywhere so i tag to be safe )#𝐨𝐨𝐜. › answered › i can’t read :(

TROS Review
Okay here is my extremely long (almost 4k words >.>) review of tros. And that’s without the 2k meta on redemption arcs I also have filed away lmao. First off: I am not leaving the kylux fandom. It’s not a good enough movie to warrant that. Second: I might make a post of things I wished we’d gotten later, but this is already WAY too long lmao. Warnings for spoilers, opinions, and general negativity
EXPLICIT RISE OF SKYWALKER SPOILERS BEYOND THIS POINT
So. I have watched the thing. I went in knowing the spoilers and oh boy, am I glad I did. Still, overall this movie was… not great lmao. It’s messy and the pacing is off and there are some very weird and straight up Bad moments, but I’m not actually upset about it anymore. It’s more like ‘there’s a lot to unpack here’ except we’re not going to unpack it or even throw away the whole thing, it’s just gonna become that one box that’s still packed and untouched from when you moved 3 years ago. It’s there, but you rarely think about it beyond the occasional ‘maybe I should finally unpack that? Nah, too much effort’
I see a lot of people writing fix it fic and that’s totally valid but tbh… I don’t think it’s worth the effort for me. I think I’m just going to pretend it never happened and write my kylux the way I always have. Maybe I’ll do something with tros at some point, maybe some mean!Hux + redeemed!Ben because I’m awful lmao but for now, it hasn’t changed my plans at all. Which is actually a good thing tbh
Anyway. I’ll start with the good simply because there’s less of it lmao. Best thing about the movie? Everyone in it is looking like a fucking snack. It’s great. These people have always been hot, but this movie really nailed that. Also the trio stuff was fun and felt genuine. I LOVED the hints that Finn is Force sensitive, and I liked him in this movie even though I wish he got more story/time. I enjoyed Rey at the beginning, but her actions and plotline made less and less sense as the movie went on. Kylo was fun; I had gotten worried after that interview that said he’s calm now but he wasn’t lmao, like at all, so that was good. Also I didn’t like how Hux died but I’m endlessly grateful Kylo wasn’t the one to kill him. That might’ve actually ruined the ship for me
The visuals were excellent (save that strobing near the beginning; I’m not epileptic, but I had to close my eyes because it was too much). Some of the jokes hit will, as did some of the emotional bits (Chewie’s “death” was very well-executed and Rey’s scream broke my heart). Weirdly enough, C-3PO is kind of the heart of the movie, which I did not expect at all. Lando’s appearances were too brief but good. I also loved D-O a lot and he’s very cute. I liked seeing a bunch of new planets and environments, however briefly. The acting was also really great throughout on most accounts. I really enjoyed 2 of the Hux scenes (when he’s sitting in that board meeting making a face like he’s mentally eviscerating everyone in the room and when he gets so excited to finally get to blow something up and then Kylo shuts him up with the Force BUT WITHOUT HARMING HIM!!!)
That’s kind of it tbh. The movie overall is really messy. I’ve seen people say it feels like a fever dream and it really does. I’ve seen descriptions of people dreaming the plot of tros and they’re less weird. The pacing in the first chunk is way too fast and there’s way too much to take in. Then things get weird in the middle. Then, well, that ending. It feels like it’s trying too hard to be liked. It’s ‘joke’, ‘reference to past movie’, ‘joke’, ‘reference to past movie’, ‘mention of hope without showing it’, etc. etc. on and on throughout it. Some of those are fun, but it got tiring very quickly. And it made it impossible for me to suspend disbelief long enough to actually get into it
I also saw a lot of reviews saying if you didn’t like tlj, you would like this one. That was not correct. I disliked this for many of same reasons I disliked tlj, but it also managed to hold tfa’s weaknesses as well. Honestly, tros feels like the worst aspects of tlj mixed with the worst aspects of tfa, mixed with way too much nostalgia and then blended up with a good heaping of mania and desperation to keep it going. It tried so hard, wanted to be liked so badly, and you can feel that watching it. It doesn’t feel genuine
It also feels like every single movie in the ST was actually from a different trilogy. None of the 3 connect to each other. You can’t say tros is a successor to tlj or tfa; it’s totally on a different path, which I’m honestly not sure how they managed that. As much as I felt tlj wasn’t a true continuation of tfa, tros feels like its own trilogy mashed into one movie. There wasn’t one consistent plot or character thread to follow between all 3 movies
I think bringing palpatine back was the first fundamental mistake. It didn’t fit. And after creating Kylo and Snoke to be very specifically Not Sith, why bring the Sith back all of a sudden? Palpatine has had his day and he didn’t need this. No one did. Much as he was creepy as hell and that was well done, it didn’t feel right to have him there. Also, I really don’t like the implication he procreated at any point skdfjskldjk
As for Rey… I know I’m in the minority here, but I never found here to be a good narrative foil for Kylo. The connection between the two doesn’t really interest me at all (and this was one of the reasons I didn’t like tlj). It worked better if they were related, which was the biggest reason I was a proponent of Rey Skywalker, but that didn’t happen. The commonalities they have are just: 1) can use the Force, 2) have been lonely. The contrasts are: 1) light vs dark (sort of; this is less explicit in tfa and I miss that greyer view of the Force) and 2) had a family vs didn’t. And that’s pretty much it. In order for 2 characters to contrast and hit the ‘complimentary opposites’ sweet spot, you need much, much more than that. Finn has and always will be a better foil for Kylo and it’s a damn shame they abandoned that in tlj and even more so in tros. I have more thoughts on her that I’ll get to later too
I did like Rey in the beginning, but the longer it went on, the less I could rationalize her actions. Why is she doing that? Why is she trying to ditch her friends all the time? Why does she heal the cave snake? Why does she stab Kylo when he’s just become a non-combatant? Why does she heal him after? Why is she trying to reach out to the spirits of past jedi? Why did she Do That after she wakes up in the end? Why did she then seem to not even care that Kylo died right after? None of this is explained. Show, don’t tell, is great, but you can’t just make massive leaps like that. I didn’t get it. None of this felt like the character I’ve gotten to know over the last few years, nor did it feel consistent within the movie itself
That said, I want to discount one complaint I’ve seen: I got no impression she’s exiling herself on Tatooine at the end. It’s very clear she’s just doing a quick funeral ritual for Luke and Leia. The Falcon is still there, ready for when she’s done. I don’t get where the ‘she’s all alone in the desert again forever and ever’ comes from because it’s clear she’s not. It’s just a private ceremony (plus obvious fanservice). That’s it
For Finn: I liked that his character got to be a lot cooler here. I’m sad that he didn’t get half the attention and plot he deserved, but at least he wasn’t treated as a joke and a coward. My tlj complaint for Finn was that he went through the exact same arc he did in tfa over again; here, he doesn’t. He’s clearly grown into himself. That I liked. But damn, he was supposed to be a main character and he really got sidelined hard. It’s also very clear finnrey was planned at some point but didn’t end up in the final cut. The tease with that felt cruel tbh. He deserved to get to tell Rey he loved her on screen
And Poe: Poe was okay in this one. He felt to me like a different character in tfa and tlj, but this one managed to mesh the two characterizations well. He’s a bit of a hothead who doesn’t think (tlj), but he also really cares about people and is trying his best to lead (tfa). That was very successfully done. However. Poe is the one character with the most backstory. He’s got novels, comics, all of it. Where in the fuck is this history of being a spice runner in all that??? Sketchy as hell to make your one Latino character being a drug runner but you know. It also felt like a HUGE retcon of the one character that actually has fully revealed backstory. Also his thing with Zori was just weird and forced and exhaustingly heterosexual. Completely pointless tbh
As I was rereading this, I realized I forgot Rose but really, that’s because she does pretty much nothing. She has very few lines, never comes along. It’s like they forgot she was there. Or just didn’t care. It was really sad and a huge disrespect to everything KMT has gone through. Both her and her character deserved more
For Hux: I liked the 2 scenes I mentioned above, but other than that I was disappointed. I said this on twitter already, but the biggest crime they committed was getting rid of his fanaticism. Tlj may have turned him into a joke, but at least he was still a zealot. Here, it’s clear he gave up his last fuck like a year ago. It’s 9 am and he’s had 6 glasses of wine because he’s lost the will to live and it’s all pointless. Might as well fuck around and give the Resistance info that might lead to the end of everything he’s worked for his entire life because nothing matters and at least Kylo will lose. That’s dumb and violently ooc. I get him being a traitor to Kylo, I am DOWN for that, but not to the FO. He cares about the FO. He is fanatically devoted to the FO. That was ridiculous and wildly out of character. Also the FO is just gone in favour of Palpatine’s fleet as soon as Hux dies? What happened to them? Are they still out there? Who even knows? WHAT A FUCKING WASTE
Also Pryde? Fuck that guy and fuck JJ/LF/Disney for thinking it’s okay to have an old imperial kill Hux. Especially since the visual dictionary today confirmed Pryde knew Brendol and our Hux had known him for years. The possible implications are gross as fuck. If anyone was going to kill Hux one on one, it should have been Finn (with a wonderful stormtrooper rebellion arc involved) for the sake of both characters. I’m personally going to choose to believe Hux was wearing a blaster proof vest (thank you, Delilah Dawson, for putting those into Black Spire as canon) and faked his death. He’s living in blissful exile with Millie now or rebuilding the actual FO and ready to take over as the Emperor he deserves to be
Oh and Leia’s scenes did feel weird. I appreciate them trying to incorporate her, but it didn’t quite work. I feel like having her be offscreen yet present would’ve worked better than most of what they used. Some worked better than others though. I also have some Thoughts about her death but I’m about to get into the second half of the movie stuff and I’ll cover that there
Now Kylo. My darling, sweet, disaster boy. So. Okay. I knew no matter what happened his end would be controversial. And I have a lot of feelings on redemption arcs that can be distilled into one thing: if they’re written well, I like them, no matter how much bad the character has done; however, they are almost never written well enough. One of the first things I said coming out of tfa back in 2015 is ‘that’s going to be a disappointing redemption arc in a few years’. It was never about what ending I wanted (I actually favour something more grey than simply ‘oh he’s good now’ or ‘dies evil’, but that was way too ambitious for them to attempt so I never bothered to hope for it), because I knew it was coming. So this didn’t really bother me beyond the fact that it was too sudden. I do blame that partially on tlj, because it took Kylo from conflicted and torn apart to ‘yeah, I’m in charge now’, but I still think this was not the way to do it. Anyway. I have a 2k word rant somewhere about redemption arcs and when they work and when they don’t that I never posted and this is the much, much shorter version of that
Also. Okay. One more thing on this. So I usually don’t like redemption arcs because they’re written badly, but my least favourite redemption arcs are those that end in death. The only one I can think of that actually worked was Vader’s, but it doesn’t work as well with Kylo. Why? Because redemption is about making amends, not being punished. It’s about choosing to stop doing bad shit and instead to do good things to make up for what you’ve done. In self-sacrifice, not only does it send the message that the only path to redemption is death, but also it means you do literally one thing and then die. That’s it. One good deed, die, you’re done. That’s too fucking easy. True redemption is waking up every single day, for the rest of your life, and continuing to choose to do good. You know that evil is easier, feels better; you’ve done it. But you’re making the choice to keep doing good and to make amends instead. And you do that for years. Decades, even. That is SO MUCH harder to do than just one good thing and then immediately dying without showing if that change is lasting or not. That is how redemption is achieved: in making that choice not once, but again and again and again. So yeah. I didn’t like that. Death redemptions aren’t convincing to me because one choice is easy; consistently making that choice over the rest of your life is much, much harder
End of point: if they were going to redeem Kylo, he needed to live and work to make up for his past mistakes in order to make it impactful. It’s a damn shame he didn’t
Also: having Leia die for the sake of a man, son or not? FUCK THAT. And, even worse, if we follow the movie’s logic: Leia died trying to reach and save her son. Which lead to… him dying anyway?! Which means Leia’s death is meaningless and she died for literally nothing. Fuck that. FUCK THAT. What the fuck. That’s bullshit
Again on the redemption: Kylo just… kills his good friends the KOR without a shred of hesitation? Also the KOR literally never speak? And Kylo says literally one word (‘ow’) after the redemption? I admit, it was fun watching him fight and also watching him get hurt. If I ignore the context of it, watching him crawl out of the pit, scrabbling on the ground, so hurt he can’t even stand up? Fuck. That was good shit tbh. Also those big, desperate puppy eyes. They’re even worse with him as Ben instead of Kylo. Bravo to Adam for playing such a convincing sad boy. I hate that his scar got healed though; I liked it
Now. The whole ending and the plot stuff. Rey being a palpatine is… okay. Fine. I don’t like it but whatever. Seems like an unnecessary excuse to bring him back. Also Luke and Leia knowing? How? Luke knew Rey for literally 1 day. And how would Leia know? And why not tell Rey, who was so desperate for answers to her past when they thought Palpatine was dead? It makes no sense. It’s just very unnecessary. Not to mention the line “you’re a palpatine” is not a thing any real human being would ever say, jfc that was clumsy and unrealistic dialogue. I don’t mind Rey going a bit dark for some time, but this was not the way to do it. Also I was really hoping for a resolution beyond ‘dark siders dead, light sider alive’ because the dichotomous nature of the Force MAKES NO SENSE. Balance is needed. Leaving the only Force user alive a light sider means something dark will come again for the sake of it – Rey should’ve gone grey and tbh tfa made me hope this trilogy would end with all surviving Force users grey. So that was disappointing
Now. The kiss. Straight up: I do not ship it. I don’t mind if other people do, but I do get touchy when they go out of their way to prove there’s nothing inherently problematic about it. I ship kylux; it’s problematic as hell. That’s a good part of why I like it. So I’m fine with r*ylo shippers as long as they do the same. Problem is: most don’t and go around insisting it’s actually the highest romance possible while leaning on incredibly misogynistic and racist tropes to prop up that argument rather than accept their ship has some questionable parts to it (like kyluxers do). It’s more a problem with the fandom for me than it is the ship in theory. Still, I don’t like it and that’s what matters for this
The fact of the matter is it felt extremely sudden and out of place. The entire first half of the movie is Kylo being an aggressive, creepy asshole to Rey. I can theoretically entertain the idea of Kylo having feelings for her (though I don’t), but I cannot see the other way around, not when Rey has so many kind, wonderful people around her. Which is why this feels so weird. There was not enough build to it. I saw a cam clip off reddit before I went in, so I had accepted it was happening but I expected a lot more lead up to it to make it not seem so sudden. None of that was there. There was no build up or reaching of understanding so it reads exactly like those versions of it I dislike: there is nothing wrong with a man berating you and insulting you and attacking you and you should love him for it. That is not enemies to lovers. That’s just abusive bullshit
And then the death. Both of them. Rey dies from… what exactly? It’s never shown at all. And same with Kylo. The leaks said it was Force exhaustion, which a) why? And b) that’s not clear in the damn movie. You need to explain things!!!! And also that means Leia, Luke, Kylo, and Rey all died (even if one didn’t stick) from using the Force too hard. Meanwhile Darth Maul survives getting cut in half and Palpatine survives falling down a shaft in a space station that explodes 2 minutes later (and, you know, all the wacky Force shit he did in this movie too). The fuck? It’s dumb. I hate it
Also the dyad thing was weird. I know the early leaks had it more explained, then the leaks said they cut it, but now it looks like they left in 3 lines of dialogue with it and cut the rest. Again, explanations people! This is not a thing in previous canon! Maybe in the EU, but that’s not canon anymore! The fuck!!!! The idea is dumb and forced to begin with, but the execution made it worse
And now for the final, largest criticism I have. A confession: I am not a star wars fan by nature. I’ve always liked them, but I preferred other sci-fi more. I’m more of an invasive species who forcibly carved my way into this fandom ecological niche because I really loved Kylo lmao. But if there is one thing star wars is defined by, I don’t think it’s love or family or any of those common themes people say. It’s hope. That’s the thing star wars does well. Even when things are darkest, it keeps the hope alive and it makes you feel that. Good will triumph. There is reason to believe in heroes, even when they stumble
This movie is not hopeful. Rogue One, a masterful tragedy, still manages a message of hope despite every single lead character dying. This one doesn’t. And tbh, I think tlj missed on this a bit too (a lot of talk about having hope, not a lot of showing us reasons to be hopeful), but it was still there. Tros does not feel hopeful. The Skywalkers are all dead. Rey has decided to download the legacy (why? No idea! The whole message was ‘don’t be afraid of who you are’ and she just then decided to become someone else? Makes no sense!!!). Anakin’s sacrifice meant nothing because Palpatine came back (and it is CRIMINAL we never got an Anakin and Kylo scene). Han and Leia’s and even Luke’s (a bit) deaths meant nothing because yeah, Kylo turned back in the end, but then he died anyway. They all gave their lives to save him and it was all for nothing. He’s still dead. Palpatine is gone and so is his fleet, but what about the FO fleet? Are they still out there? Are there brainwashed stormtroopers still trapped in its clutches (also, they were so close with Jannah and Finn to adding depth here, but nope, the stormtroopers are still cannon fodder in every fight scene even though they’re literally slaves!!!!)? Who knows!
This movie only feels conclusive in that so many characters we love are dead. That’s it. There’s more questions than answers and so much left unresolved. There’s no sense of hope in it. There’s barely a sense of victory. It’s not satisfying. Even the celebration at the end feels weird and like it’s trying to force you to be happy. The jedistormpilot hug was good, but the lesbian kiss was such a cheap attempt at trying to appease people calling for representation. The moment with Lando and Jannah at the end was probably the most hopeful part of the movie and neither of them are lead characters
Idk. I know this is pretty negative. But I didn’t really enjoy this movie. Some parts were fun, or funny, or exciting, or emotional. But overall? No. This was not a satisfying conclusion for any of these characters, either the new or the old. They missed. Hard. Not one character was truly done justice. And it’s disappointing. But it’s over now and I have no intentions of letting it dictate my fandom activities. I’m just going to pretend it didn’t happen and call it a day
#how! did! this! get! so! long!#lmao I just hope it's coherent#you know#unlike the movie skdflfsj#but anyway#I did not love it#some things were okay and others were good#but oh god the consistency#the writing#the characters#why????#also keep in mind these are my opinions and you're allowed to not share them#anyway#enjoy I guess?#shut up nerd#text#long post#meta#tros spoilers#rise of skywalker spoilers#spoilers

Just watched The Rise Of Skywalker
1- There was... a lot of blue. This movie was very blue.
2- It was much better than I expected
3- As a Reylo hater I feel like I should talk about that kiss. I honestly think Ben loved Rey, but Rey never loved him (sorry not sorry) and I think it would’ve made sense if he kissed her and she looked at him in a ‘wtf’ way and then he just died. But HER kissing HIM?? what even. That made absolutely no sense.
4- They ruined Rose’s character. She was so important in The Last Jedi and in this one she was barely there at all.
5- Rey being a Palpatine was... cool. And it made some sense. But I still don’t really know how I feel about it? I have mixed feelings.
6- The beginning and middle of the movie were mediocre at best. Starting from the moment Ben threw his lightsaber away, I actually really loved it. The ending was awesome, and the Palpatine vs Rey fight was amazing! Really loved the entire “I am all of the Sith” “and I am all of the Jedi” thing, ALSO, her hearing all the jedi talking to her... was beautiful, in all honesty
7- Leia’s death was predictable. I understand that Carrie Fished obviously couldn’t make that scene herself, but Han Solo appearing to Ben instead of her just took some sense away from her death, too.
8- Finn never telling Rey how he felt was...... I... That’s one of the things I STILL don’t know how I feel about. Because I somehow shipped Finnrey, especially in the Force Awakens.
9- I started thinking about the Mandalorian wayyy too many times. Which was a problem. I’d just see or hear something that reminded me of Dyn or Baby Yoda and just lost track of the movie. A shame it came out at this moment, seriously, I couldn’t focus on the actual movie. I kept hoping for a cameo of any the Mandalorian character
10- Rey,;, was,,, so sweet. A cinnamon roll. I love her. Sweetie pie
11- Idk why but it bothered me that Rey’s father was Palpatine’s son. For some reason I wanted it to be her mother... idk.
12- That Tatooine ending made me so, so, so nostalgic. But it was beautiful. The best moment in the movie, I think. Also her taking the yellow lightsaber, her own lightsaber and not somebody else’s.. Yeah, I loved it.

So I heard the leak guy whose been in the know is saying they did actually filmed a Finnrey scene at the end. I’m really hoping we get to see it because if true that’s the new canon as far as I’m concerned.
I hope that they release it too and I hope that all of this controversy surrounding the mess that was tros, makes them reveal what was planned for some of their cuts and versions of the movie before Disney took over. Also if they have scenes reshooted some scenes then I wonder if they will release the ones they shot at first.
Does Finn have more scenes centered around his journey from being a stormtrooper to a member of the resistance. Did the script go deeper into Finn’s back story and his family? And I wonder if the other scripts didn’t manage to butcher and ruin Rey’s character like the final one did.
Some of the ideas that they had before sounds better than what they ended up with.

so i saw the star war
spoilers ahoy
i guess this is just gonna be random bullet points
* i actually feel pretty chill about it. yay for being spoiled. also like.... if you ignore the ridiculous stuff there’s actually a lot to have fun with in this one. i don’t know how i’ll feel about it once i’ve processed it more. i just know i had fun while watching it, which i know isn’t true for everybody. i totally understand the negativity - it all makes sense to me. i’m just glad i sort of.... FORCED myself to have enough distance to just go in like i’M PrepArED fOr wHAtEveR’
*i did like all the jumping around between locations in the first half and how ben would show up everywhere rey was. what a ‘you’re everywhere i go’ pairing. /chef’s kiss/. also having the different locations gives a sense of spaciousness (even if it’s all happening over a short period of time) which i missed in tlj.
*one of the things that gave me the most joy as the hux thing ??? X’’’D it was EXACTLY like that ‘the farce awakens’ ep where hux LITERALLY JOINS THE RESISTANCE cuz he can’t stand kylo. like what kind of fanfic...... how do the hux fans out there feel? (i really love the hux fans they’re a great bunch XD). shame that he was gone right after though.
* i actually enjoyed the trio dynamic? like i get the desire to move away from ‘trio mentality’ but the rey/poe tension with finn as mediator was fun. and finn and poe as joint generals? adorable. shame that the whole finn/poe thing got a bit clouded by.... stormpilot baiting and rose erasure and all the things... Also i’m not anti any character - i like zorii - but.... let poe stay a gay icon? i guess he can still be a queer icon it’s all good i’m down for whatever.
*speaking of finn.... loved seeing more of his humour back. didn’t love that there was no unpacking of how he feels taking out stormtroopers. but loved the found family of jannah and the other ex-stormtroopers. i feel like that gave SOME resolution/depth to finn’s origins. and finn being a non force user but seemingly super attuned to the force and its ways? i can roll with that.
*more speaking of finn... i wonder what they were doing with the ‘thing he wants to tell rey that he never gets to tell rey’. seems like an obvious ‘i love you’ thing. but at the same time we got reylo (/basks in that for a second/). it feels to me like throwing a bone to the finnrey people? like they didn’t get it in this movie but it could be a thing in the future? regaurdless, i did like how finn and rey were very connected and back to that loving friendship they had in tfa. we never quite got the ‘you have a force bond with the supreme leader?!!’ conversation but we got.... SOME conversation.
* speaking of the supreme leader... kinda love that we got renperor AND ben solo TM. i prefer to view ben more holistically (he is both ‘ben’ and ‘kylo’) but i get that making them two distinct identities was a helpful shortcut of sorts. he could ‘kill’ kylo and switch to being ben in a single scene. i always prefer Soft Boi Ben but if we were gonna get Bad Boy Kylo i’m glad they established it right out the gate. it was like ok, this is what to expect; this is where we’re at with this character.
*ben with his costume change at the end....... omg. gave me BIG smuggler!Ben vibes. urgh, give me all the AUs. ben deserves more.
*the amount of swagger when he was fighting the KOR
*idk i feel like i’m not even touching on the big stuff. this was just a ‘get all my side thoughts out of my system’ post.
*adam’s smile after the kiss though......... ... /the most beautiful thing in this world/
*truly iconic that people were right about the strategic, covert introduction of force healing via baby yoda like one month before tros.
*oh yeah it was wILD that so much of the imagery from the trailers/tv spots etc was in like the first five mintues of the movie ??? i totally assumed the ‘i have been every voice you’ve ever heard inside your head’ moment would be climactic rather than right up front
*oh yeah the vader mask.... that didn’t really mean anything in the end then did it?
* re: ben’s death. maybe it’s because i was braced for it but in some ways it’s the best way he could have gone. he was definitely happy and reunited with the light - both through love of rey and of his family. hIGHKey could have done with ben’s force ghost also appearing at the end? the only good thing about not seeing it is.... LF deciding to retcon his death ? ??XD obs they’re not gonna but if you want a crackpot silver lining there it is.
*what exactly does rey’s future look like, may i ask?
* oh yeah, Passing The Saber Through The Force. maybe my favourite moment. the force bond as a bare concept is so romantic to me i would watch a whole trilogy just exploring the magic system of that - it’s limitations and possibilities.
* i do like that jj developed the visual style of the bond. we got to see them occupying the same space, the way each of them would be seeing the other (’can you see my surroundings, i can’t see yours, just you’)
*i miss that rian johnson sound editing on the bond though..... god, the iNTIMACY of the tlj bond scenes....
*’i DID want to take your hand’
*also just the word choice of ‘take your hand’/ ‘i offered you my hand’. it’s extremely marriage.
*there was also a moment in the hanger when ben was like ‘we’re one’ basically? he was saying it in the context of rey’s lineage but still...............the validation. one soul.
*palps was like ‘you live and die together’ which made me REALLY think of skytalkers podcast. obviously assumed they would both have to LIVE together but.... /deep sigh/
*blah this could go on forever i’ll add more later
edit #1:
* OH YEAH! reverse anidala was such a thing! why did it have to be SO reverse anidala though? X’D instead of taking her life, he gives her his own. (i know it’s not clear anakin totally killed padme etc etc but ya feel me)
* ok i hate that ben died obvs obvs but, taking that for what it is, it was very romeo and juliet. i kinda love just the imagery of it. like... the physical blocking/choreography of adam getting daisy into his arms, holding her, then he falls and it’s her holding him. the way she catches his neck. really reminded me of the smoothness of the bridal carry. and rey’s flexed foot in that moment of shock. love the body language. back to that kind of ‘’staccato’’ rey of tfa days.
edit #2:
*lololol @ LF trying to establish how ‘bad’ kylo is by having him kill a bunch of people in the beginning. it was just.... Hot.
edit #3:
* rose deserves better. obviously. she looked so good though. i like that she had some moments with connix too.
* ben called han ‘dad’......
*ben standing there, overlooking the waves, with his leG EXTENDED BEFORE HIM. wanderer above a sea of fog. wanderer above a sea of foggg.
* rey having compassion for the snake thing. we been knew. kinda nice to have it in there. obviously good set up for ~later force healing shenanigans~
* OH YEAH OH YEAH. i kept thinking about atla. i know people have been making comparisons to it from the start and i’ve been DEEPLY INTO those comparisons. but it was truly a blessing for me to remember.... there is a version of this out there that you love and that is Good Content TM. legit i can just go watch atla again to heal from this. omg yeah cuz REY HEALING HIS WOUND ALSO HEALED HIS SCAR. very crystal cave.......... nah but nah but - the ‘you are every jedi’ was EXTREMELY avatar-esk..... like, engage avatar state. i don’t like how it ended up being the same old conflict between jedi and sith - ‘good’ and ‘bad’ - OBVIOUSLY THE POINT IS TO INTEGRATE THE CONFLICTING PARTS OF SELF; THE SHADOW SIDE; TO TRANSCEND OLD DICHOTOMIES - but i did love hearing all the voices from past jedi. that’s some good ‘the ancestors are with you’ shit.
edit #4:
* i think the first thing we hear rey say is ‘be with me’? ngl i was like ‘pls be invoking the force bond’ X’D i am a clown. that was a beautiful shot though. and love that a version of the bond kicked in like two seconds after that.
edit #5:
*there’s that bit where reylo are fighting on the death star ruins and he’s winning and rey kinda falls to her knees panting and lowkey defeated and, not to be a shallow bitch but..... it was Hot.
*also dark rey......... was HOT. SHE WAS SO KIRA, WHATEVER THE FUCK THAT MEANS, AND I WAS INTO IT LIKE HNGGGG
*obvs i wanted rey to be truly no one. but casting jodie comer as rey’s mum ? ????? urgh, pefection, i love it.
*palps was so random i stg..... his plan was.... convoluted to say the least.
*also who was under all those hoods?
*the KOR just kinda... being around again was hilarious. no explaination required. the boys are back in town. ben facing them without a mask and essentially wearing his pjs? loved it.
edit #6:
*seriously though ben’s redemption outfit.............. /heart eyes emoji into the sunset/.......... you can see his collar bone.............. /cares about the important things/.................
edit #7:
*one thing i loved about the reylo was how Space Wizards TM they both were in this movie. it so highlights their connection by making it clear that they are each other’s only peer. i thought it would be a thing of ‘why is the supreme leader constantly interacting with/going after this girl?’ but it’s not because it’s so clear that they are the only two people on each others’ level. no one would dare question the fact that they’re constantly circling each other in a lustful murderous rage.

Rise of Skywalker
I have finally seen Rise of Skywalker. Overall? I liked it.
As a Stand Alone Movie: It was awesome. The characters all had amazing chemistry (I’ve never been more attached to the Rey-Finn-Poe trio), it’s visually stunning (even in scenes that were kinda “what” in hindsight), and even though they added a bunch of new stuff that feels like it came out of nowhere, they set it up well enough that when it came back in the finale it was pretty awesome (the lightsaber hand off).
As A Movie With the Rest of the Franchise: I have...some issues. With some things. Not enough to kill my enjoyment of the film, but definitely things I will be 100% ignoring in fanfic. :D
But that’s enough of that. My thoughts of the good & bad are below and full of spoilers. Enjoy it below the cut. :D
I’m going to talk about the bad first so I can end on a positive note. Like. I enjoyed the film. I want that to be clear. There was even stuff where I disliked the decisions they made, but if they were going to go in that direction, the stuff they gave us was pretty rad.
But first, the stuff that bugged me. :D
Rose Got Sidelined
Look, I liked the new ex-Stormtrooper girl that Finn bonded with, but Rose was really important to him in the last film and in this one....she just kinda got grounded and forgotten. I guess I should be glad she was there at all, but still.
As a hardcore FinnRey shipper--I was upset she was forgotten.
Finn’s Words to Rey
They referenced “Finn wanted to tell Rey something” multiple times and we DIDN’T GET TO HEAR HIM SAY IT.
I’m kinda ticked about it.
Hux’s Death
When I first heard about Hux being the mole/spy I was like “The guy who built Starkiller.” I was really confused how a guy like Hux could have been Resistance the entire time, but then I found out a second spoiler that it was a last minute change because he was being petty.
Which I loved.
And then they killed him like two seconds later and brushed past him like nothing happened.
Look. I know I’m a Kylux shipper so I’m a little more invested in Hux than most, but in canon him & Kylo Ren are rivals. They hate each other. Hux is a tactical genius He’s smart. Kylo Ren keeps him around because they’ve been working together forever and he’s valuable. (For goodness sake, there’s a spin off comic adventure where Kylo Ren saves Hux’s life multiple times. They’re like siblings that hate each other but know that the other dying in the one run would be bad).
I’m not asking for Hux to survive the movie. I’m asking for Kylo to acknowledge he died.
But it would have been better if Hux died while sabotaging something. Like. Keep that asshole in the background breaking shit the entire movie. SOMETHING.
Convenience
This movie has a lot of beats where stuff just...happened in their favor. I mean, it’s mostly for time’s sake, but everything they needed appeared when they needed it. It was very “Here’s a problem.” wait two seconds. “Fixed it!” and then move on.
It’s not a deal breaker, but I did start to notice it.
And I’ll tack on the new force powers too: Rey’s healing and her and Kylo’s connection that was strong enough to transport physical objects. I mean, it set up a cool moment later, but it was like “When did they learn to do that?”
Sheev Palpatine
This entire plot feels like it came out of freaking nowhere. They did some cool stuff with it, but I can’t help but feel just flat out Rey vs Supreme Leader Kylo could have made for a great arc.
The Knights of Ren
They arrived! I was upset they weren’t in the last film and now that they’ve arrived...they did nothing. They stood around looking menacing and then Kylo killed them. Joy.
They were sort of a disappointment, but it wasn’t that big of a deal.
Kylo Ren did NOT need to Die.
There was no reason for Rey to die after beating Palpatine. None. Zip. She won. Rey losing all of her energy and dying was pointless. That didn’t need to happen.
If you wanted her to be weak so Kylo/Ben/Whatever could come over and share some energy to help her out so you can get that kiss scene? Fine.
But don’t kill BEN SOLO afterwards.
His mom forgave him.
His dad forgave him.
REY FORGAVE HIM.
Let the boy live and do better. Sometimes a deathbed redemption is great, but you do not spend an entire movie talking about how they were a Dyad in the Force only to kill one of them off leaving Rey as a solo (psh, hah) act again.
*throw hands up* They should have both lived. Happy ending. I wanted one.
OKAY ENOUGH OF THAT.
Let’s talk about the good stuff.
Finn
Lord I love Finn. I’ve liked him since the first film, but he is easily one of my favorite characters. And he got to do great things in this movie.
My particular favorite was him sassing Poe the entire film. “So how long have you been able to do that?” and “You did not.” being my favorite two.
He’s a voice of reason in that little group and I appreciate him.
Palpatine
The lightning thing he did at the end to attack all the ships was pretty rad. Kinda dumb in a “how long as he been able to do that” way, but it looked awesome.
Rey beating Palpatine
That fight was rad and I don’t care what anyone says. Rey beating Palpatine with both Luke and Leia’s sabers was awesome.
“They’re not using speeders.”
I loved that. XD
C-3P0
I have always loved this dorky droid the most out of the main droids and I continue to do so. He had great scenes in this film and I love him.
Han and Ben’s Talk
Ug. That was good. I’ve been waiting for Han to talk with Kylo since he died. *holds them* I don’t even care that was the moment that got rid of Kylo Ren’s lightsaber. T-T
Kylo Ren’s Lightsaber
I love that stupid thing. It’s feral. It growls. It’s beautiful. I’ve loved it in every single movie and watching it get thrown into the water killed me. But I had it for a little bit. *holds hand out* That’s what matters.
Rey vs Kylo
Dude. DUDE. Their fights were epic. Their fight were Rey was in the ship and Kylo was on the ground was phenomenal. I loved how it depicted their connection. I loved the transitions between scenes. The dialogue. The just everything.
Every time they clashed I was loving this movie. Their Force fight over the shuttle (Rey with Lightning!!!), or their fight in the old Deathstar ruins, or just their mental chats--it was all good.
Heck, I even forgave the whole object transference thing they had going on when she dropped a saber to him during the final fight.
Rey and Kylo had some awesome scenes and chemistry and fights this entire film and it was just great.
And That’s It
I’m sure I’ll think of other things, but a lot of things were nitpicks that didn’t really matter (Like Poe being made general did not make sense, but it’s not the end of the world or them making us believe Chewy was dead only to bring him right back, etc.).
Or stuff I can’t think of at the moment. Lol.
Overall I enjoyed it. Fun movie. Not perfect, but most things aren’t.
(And fanfic exists, so I can have the best of canon and What Ifs :P)
#Kylo Ren remains my favorite character#with Finn and Hux as closes seconds#followed by Rey#but who am I kidding#Ren's Lightsaber is my ultimate fav. Lol.#Star Wars#Kylo Ren#Rey#Finn#Rise of Skywalker#Review

I agree with your post. Unfortunately, the you know whats have ruined things. I think JJ was told not to antagonize them and there is going to be slight r--- before he dies, and Finn is going to have more to do than in TLJ because how could he not, but he won't be FS and he'll basically be out of the third act entirely until the end. This is a shame. Racism has stricken again.
Yep. And this is literally exactly what I'm afraid of.
It makes me so mad lol because star wars should KNOW how bad it is that it took this long to cast any POC in significant roles, especially after considering and then rejecting a Black actor to play Han back in the day specifically because of how it would threaten white men's racist feelings of control over white women (Leia) and racist white women's feelings as well.
I feel like I should note when I have these discussions that I'm white- I don't claim to have experience and perspective that I don't have. I try to imagine what it was like for fans of color growing up with the franchise, and for fans of color who finally got more characters who looked like them I'm the new trilogy only to have those characters...well you know.
I'm also very very concerned about their ability to portray something between Rey and Kylo without having it tacitly support the idea that men can hurt and attempt to control women/harm their friends and still love them. Star wars is something SO MANY kids grow up with...To put it clearly: fans purposefully choosing toxic and dark relationships to explore in fiction on their own time is something that doesn't affect me at all--the audience can at least self select. My unease happens when it has to be canon and what that means for the franchise and the legacy of star wars as a whole.
Also it's weird because it's my NOTP but at first it was definitely something people shipped because they wanted the hero/villain toxicity/darkness (I get shipping hero/villain ships! I do! Even though I don't like this instance!)....but now it's a mushy romantic soft "loving" thing and that honestly makes me ???????? People cant even call Kylo a villain. (Just yesterday in the rebelfinn tag of all places someone wrote a long ass post about how Finn is not a good guy and Kylo is not a bad guy..........yeah LMAO). MANY fans long said that if they wanted a soft loving romance they'd ship finnrey but since they want a dark, antagonistic toxicity they ship Rey/Kylo.....but now the script is flipped and it turns out that wasn't even true, they just want what Finn and Rey have transplanted somewhere else. Fanon Kylo has slowly but surely leeched Finn's personality trains and dynamics and I know I'm not the first person to say this. many people have also pointed out before how many edits physically replace Finn or John in screenshots/photoshoots so that Rey or Daisy is looking like that at Kylo instead.
And then given the news that this was more or less going to be Leia's movie....it feels so bittersweet to know we'll see her on screen as Leia for the last time but I'm not even able to get excited for that because I'm too uneasy about Finn and the idea he couldn't even be FORCE SENSITIVE AFTER THIS. I'm remembering all the absolutely OUTRAGE at the idea of a Black Stormtrooper and like a Black Jedi? Way more backlash still, I guess we'll see how cowardly sw is
Sorry this got long. Pleeeease feel free to come off anon and message me, although I know people are shy. But so am I if it makes you feel better 😂

thoughts on TRoS
I still need to see the movie again to really capture all my thoughts on everything, but almost 24 hours later I’m starting to process everything.
I didn’t ever hate TLJ, but I also never really loved it like so many of my friends did. I was pretty neutral about it - I loved certain aspects of it (which I won’t go into on this post) but I never felt as connected to it. With that said, I wish this last movie had been the second one. I still see TLJ as part of the trilogy, but I wish that was more of a solo movie because I would’ve liked the side stories (like Finn’s) to be more in depth and more of the focus of the movie. I felt like there were too many storylines at times to really appreciate all of them. I really loved the whole idea of you can be strong (and force-sensitive) even coming from nowhere (I still want a movie for those kids in the last scene).
ANYWAY
I think TRoS was way too fast-paced and rushed and I couldn’t really enjoy certain aspects of the movie because the next scene would start before I could process the last (and usually comedic after a heavy or intense scene). If it had been split into two different movies, with more focus on Finn and Poe and hell even Rose (who I forgot was in the movie unless the camera panned over her quickly) for one movie and then the third one could focus on the ending of the Skywalker legacy, that would’ve been better. I also really want a movie based off the defected Stormtroopers - I fell in love with Jannah’s character and I want she and Lando to have their own movie focusing on her life and finding out about her past.
I know it was difficult to work in the Leia storyline with Carrie FIsher’s death, but I felt like that could’ve been handled a little bit better.
Adam Driver killed it. I’ve always thought he was a great actor and he proved it in this movie. I liked seeing Han (and that his parents were the ones to bring him back to the Light) even though I’ve heard a lot of reviews that it was cheesy or unlikely. I personally liked how that was done.
I’m not a huge fan of Reylo, I don’t like toxic relationships - I’ve been in one before and TLJ was hinting at it so much it left a bad taste in my mouth. I was literally cringing in my seat and curling up in a ball in second-hand embarrassment at it. That being said, if Adam Driver smiled at me like that with that dimple, I’d run myself through with a lightsaber, it was so beautiful.
I hated the Palpatine reveal. I knew it going in, but I still kept muttering “No, no, nooo” under my breath when it was revealed. i thought it was weak and completely ruined Rian’s whole story arc that you can come from nowhere and still be strong (which took me a while to appreciate b/c i was obsessed with Rey Kenobi theories)
Also the unrequited FinnRey thing was garbage and Disney is weak and cowardly for not making FinnPoe a thing (i’m gonna do a whole rant about that later) ALSO is Finn force sensitive or not?? He felt Rey’s death but then the movie never addresses it agian?? WHAT? I’ve been saying he’s force sensitive since TFA!! I love Rey - and I love Daisy Ridley, but I really wish John Boyega had been the main character of the trilogy instead (which has been a wish of mine since the first one came out) since his past was so interesting and i really wish they’d gone more in depth about it. PS JJ, i’ll fucking fight you for making Poe a spice runner? his parents were in the resistance!!! READ A FUCKIN BOOK MAN!
I didn’t like that Rey was alone again on a desert planet - but I loved the last shot with the twin suns and the swell of the music, JJ was right - it did make me happy and sad at the same time.
I might get a lot of shit for this, but I personally loved that she said Rey Skywalker. I thought she was going to say I’m Rey Nobody or something - which I would’ve been fine with, but I feel like with being a “Skywalker” it gave her the family she always craved, in Luke and Leia. Also in the SW EU, Skywalker means one who walks in the stars and I’ve always loved that anyone can adopt that name who has been freed or found the freedom they always craved.
SO
Overall, I didn’t hate it, but it’s also not one of my favorites of the trilogies. I think I’m always gonna be an OT fan, even though people will say that it’s cringey and too much of a fan service, but i’m not a huge movie nerd so I enjoy movies for getting me away from the real world (and the use of the cinematography) and not really whether they are different and more “out there”
Nonetheless,
I cried. I got angry. I got nostalgic (a lot - almost too much). I enjoyed a lot of aspects of it which made me go out of the movie wanting to go back in and watch the movie again to see what I missed. I was emotionally exhausted - which i expected since this was the end of the trilogies (lol for now anyway)
now in the meantime, I’m going to read a bunch of fanfiction and wait until i see it again next week
#sw#star wars#sw spoilers#tros spoilers#i'm emo about this#also if you comment something shitty about my opinion i'll fuckin fight you
